Bacon, Augustus Octavius (1839-1914) - Born in Liberty County the son of Octavius and Mary Louise Jones Bacon. Graduated from the University of Georgia law school in 1860. He was adjutant of the Ninth Georgia Regiment, Confederate Army, during the Civil War. He married Virginia Lamar and made his home in Macon, Georgia, after the war. He was a member of the Georgia House of Representatives for 14 years, and was its speaker for eight years. He came to within one vote being elected governor of Georgia in 1883. He was elected to the U.S. Senate four times. Bacon County, Georgia, was named in his honor when it was created July 27, 1914, from Appling, Pierce and Ware counties.
