Elliott, John III (1773-1827)

Elliott, John III (1773-1827) - Grandson of John Elliott, one of the earliest settlers of Liberty County, and son of Colonel John Elliott. He married Esther Dunwody, daughter of James Dunwody , a Liberty County physician, on October 1, 1795. After she died he married Martha Stewart, daughter of Brigadier General Daniel Stewart. He was a U.S. senator from 1819 to 1825. Fifteen years before the Civil War unknown persons broke open his grave in Midway Church cemetery and took his skull. It was thought the skull was used in voo doo practices along the coast. It was recovered and returned to its rightful place.
